The Governor of Victoria, The Honorable Linda Dessau AC, hosted a reception at the Government House for the Consular Corps in Melbourne on 21 January 2021 to formally welcome the year and commemorate this year’s Australia Day.

The 29th Governor of Victoria was appointed by the Queen of England on 1 July 2015, a traditional practice started in 1855. As Governor, she has the power to dissolve the State Parliament and call an election in the event of a vote of no-confidence in the Government.

In her speech, she thanked the Consular Corps for the support offered during the 2019 bushfires and in the midst of the 2020 lockdowns due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19.

She alluded to “formidable signs” in the recovery of Australian economy and identified priority areas of development such as renewable energy, education, e-commerce, technology, infrastructure, biomedical research and agriculture.

The Governor invited 14 Victorian producers to showcase their fine food and beverages where she congratulated them for having “risen to the exceptional challenges of the past year.” END
